Prisoners yell, cheer, and challenge “with bliss” (164). Unexpectedly, two men in striped outfits open the train unit entryways and tell the ladies they are free. On the detainees? fourth day without nourishment or water, the train stops in a valley close to a cornfield. She sees a dogfight and hears “a progression of boisterous blasts” (163). They travel throughout the day and night without nourishment or drink. She appeals to God the gossipy tidbits are not valid. Bitton-Jackson can’t comprehend where a huge number of detainees will be housed and encouraged. Others state the Germans would not set out murder them now, with the Americans so close. Gossipy tidbits state they will be slaughtered, as “Germans lean toward no observers to their barbarities” (162). They don’t have a clue where they are going. The Lost Game – In the Train, April 23-27, 1945 Trucks land to ship detainees to the train, where they board “many freight cars,” one hundred prisoners for each vehicle (162).
